Cake mix apple cobbler uses a couple store-bought ingredients to make a delicious, cozy dessert that tastes completely homemade. This recipe transforms a can of apple pie filling and a box of yellow cake mix into a delicious apple dessert that's perfect for fall!
Everyone loves apple desserts - they're the epitome of fall! But sometimes you just don't have the time to take an afternoon for a baking project.
This easy apple dump cake recipe with just 4 ingredients is the perfect autumnal dessert to have up your sleeve! There's no pie dough to make, and no apples to chop.
It's essentially a cake mix apple cobbler, made with a boxed yellow cake mix and canned apple pie filling. If you need a seasonal treat for a Sunday family dinner or to bring to a potluck or party, this dump cake recipe will come in clutch.
My favorite way to enjoy it is warm, topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup for the perfect taste of fall. It's always a hit!
What is a Dump Cake?
A dump cake is a type of dessert that's made by dumping the ingredients into a pan and baking.
Dump cakes can have a cake layer or a cobbler layer on top, and a gooey fruit layer (frequently pie filling) on the bottom.
These types of cakes are quick and easy and typically use convenient store-bought ingredients like cake mixes and canned pie fillings.
The trick to a good dump cake is to not mix the layers!

Ingredients in Apple Pie Filling Dump Cake with Yellow Cake Mix
In this section I explain the ingredients and give substitution ideas. For the full recipe (including ingredient amounts), see the recipe card below.
- Canned apple pie filling - you can swap this out for any type of canned pie filling you like; cherry pie filling is another favorite of mine
- Boxed yellow cake mix - if you want to bump up the warm spices, you can use a box of spiced cake mix
- Old-fashioned rolled oats - this is optional; it makes this cake mix cobbler similar to classic apple crisp
- Unsalted butter - the butter gets melted and poured over the top of the cake before baking
How to Make Apple Dump Cake
- Add the apple pie filling to a 9 by 13-inch casserole dish and spread it out evenly.
- Sprinkle the cake mix evenly onto the apple pie filling, and then sprinkle the oats evenly on top. Drizzle the melted butter evenly on top, trying to make sure there aren’t any dry patches.
- Bake (uncovered) until the cobbler is golden on top and the sides are bubbling, about 45 minutes to 1 hour at 350F.
Storage and Reheating
Once this cake mix apple cobbler has cooled to room temperature, you can store it covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
You don't have to reheat it, but similar to apple pie, I prefer apple cobbler warm. That's how you get the vanilla ice cream to melt down into the cobbler!
If you're heating multiple servings, you can warm apple dump cake in the oven (covered with foil at 350F for about 20 minutes or until warm). And if you're just reheating a single serving, the microwave works well (I microwave it in 30-second intervals checking between each).
Cake Mix Apple Cobbler FAQs
Can You Leave Apple Dump Cake Out Overnight?
Yes! This dump cake is fine wrapped and left overnight at room temperature. The next day, transfer it to the fridge for up to 3 days more.
Is Dump Cake Supposed to Be Gooey?
Yes! The top layer of a dump cake is usually similar to cake or a cobbler. The bottom is typically made of a gooey fruity pie filling.
Why Don't You Mix Dump Cakes?
You might be wondering, What happens if you stir a dump cake?
The answer to that, my friends, is you will no longer have a dump cake!
The beauty of an apple dump cake is the layers: gooey apple pie filling on the bottom and the crisp-like cobbler topping. If you stir a dump cake, that is all lost. You'll just end up with a regular cake!
